Stop that Slammin!

Once little legs get mobile, little fingers get into trouble.

How to keep a door from slamming shut and pinching fingers? Ouch! A sliced pool noodle is, of course, a quick, easy, and very practical fix.

If you’re a little more on the crafty side, you might like whipping up some of these door bumpers from the Crochet Dynamite website. You can find the directions by clicking Door Jammer 01here

Thanks to my mommy buddy Keva in Omaha for raising the question and finding some solutions.

The Beautiful Transition

How often do you have the opportunity to watch a woman make the transition into her Crone skin?

In 1975 photographer Nicholas Nixon took a picture of four sisters standing side by side. From then on he took a photograph every year, for 40 years. The collection, which has traveled the world over the past four decades, is on display at the New York Museum of Modern Art until January 4. In November the museum also released the book The Brown Sisters: Forty Years.

There is more to this exhibit than chronicaling the passage of time. In each woman’s posture, the lines in her face, the look in her eye, her contact with the sister next to her, we see how she has grown into herself and found her place in a family group. I can think of no better description of attaining Cronedom. To see all 40 years recorded and read Susan Minot’s evocative text in the New York Times article, click here.

Gifts for Your Feathered Friends

Not all our hacks come from grandmothers.

This was passed along to me by my daughter, and she found it on the saltwater-kids website. Click here for the link, and you’ll find an easy recipe to make bird seed ornaments that can be hung outside as treats for birds and bird watchers alike.

Keep Your Germs to Yourself

There are some wicked bugs going around right now. Help cut down the spread of germs.

Here’s another great hack from Grammy Deb. Give your poor sickie an empty tissue box to put their used tissues in. When full, the box can be disposed of without other family members coming into contact with the yucky stuff.

Thanks, Grammy Deb, and we hope you feel better soon!

A shout out to Ari Seth Cohen, who, inspired by his grandmothers, has built a career – and a wonderful blog! – on photographing fashionable women over the age of 50. You can find Ari’s blog here, and if you’re a Netflix subscriber you can enjoy the documentary of his work and meet his inspirational models who remind us you’re never too old to rock a fabulous hat.

Big Needs in Small Packages

A little recycling gives you a downsized diaper bag.

This idea comes from Grammy Deb, who says, “I saved the Target Velcro closure fabric bag that a fitted crib sheet came in. It works very well to hold a couple of diapers/pull-ups and a small package of wipes to carry in the car/larger purse etc. That way you’re not caught ‘without’ even if you don’t bring a diaper bag.”

Grammy Deb also knew that the word “Velcro” is a registered trademark and therefore capitalized. Nana learned something today!

Play in the Snow – Any Season

Two safe and easy ingredients. But wait until your little no longer put everything in her mouth.

Here’s a hack from Grandma Kris in Florida.

Because in Florida you have to make your own snow, right?
